Discernment counseling is a type of brief couples therapy. It is helpful for:
Discernment counseling helps you decide between three options: ending the relationship, committing to 6 months of couples therapy or postponing a decision. The goal is for the couple to understand what went wrong in the relationship and to feel comfortable in the path they choose going forward.
Typically, there are between one and five sessions, including a combination of individual and joint sessions. A significant focus is understanding if there any problems that can be solved and if there are potential solutions to the relationship issues.
Ultimately, the couple can make the decision regarding their future with more confidence and understanding. If they decide to pursue couples therapy, they often have more hope and commitment to the process because they did discernment counseling first.
